Formed in 1991 by student/players, the San Jose State University Spartans are set to make their new season one of the best in team history. A member of the A.C.H.A., (American Collegiate Hockey Association, the National Governing Body for all Collegiate Club Hockey Teams in the United States) the Spartans are always among the top-ranked teams in western region, qualifying for the ACHA National Tournament four times in their nine year history. Last Season the Spartans qualified as one of the final 16 Selected teams to attend the ACHA Nationals in Indianapolis, finishing tenth in the nation only the second time San Jose State has cracked the top ten.
The Spartan hockey team is recognized by the University as a recreational club sport and is not funded by men's athletics. Supported by the players themselves, most of the teams fundraising comes from sponsorships (80%) with the rst coming from game receipts (20%.) With an annual budget of $65,000, sponsorships and contributions are vital to the program, without them the Spartan Hockey team would simply cease to exist.
A community service-minded organization, San Jose State players have been, and continue to be, involved with the San Jose Sharks Community Development Department, helping in many of the Sharks youth programs. The team also supports and puts on the Annual ÒGold Rush TournamentÓ, which features the top four Collegiate hockey teams in the Bay Area. One of the club's goals is to develop an Inter-Collegiate hockey program, emphasizing hockey talent from the Northern California area. A University where local youth area players can attend, further their education and hockey interests, without having to go 1500 miles away to school.
The deadline for all sponsorships and contributions, is November 1st, 2001. The players, and officers of the San Jose State Hockey Team ask for your support in either of the following ways: TEAM SPONSOR DONATIONS $5000 Individuals or businesses who make a $5,000 donation will receive a patch on the Game Jerseys and receive special advertising and season tickets. PROGRAM ADVERTISING $100 - $1,000 Placing an Ad in the San Jose State Game Program.
All donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE! SJSU ICE HOCKEY is a non-profit organization through Associated Students. SJSU will have a 16 home games this season. Games start at 7:45pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, at the Ice Centre of San Jose. It is located at the corner of Tenth St. and Alma, near Spartan Stadium. Opponents include, UCLA, USC, Stanford, Cal Berkeley, Utah State, Weber State, University of Oregon, DePaul University, Western Washington University, University of New Mexico, Palmer College West, and others. The ACHA National tournament will be held March 4th - 8th, in New York City. With support from the local community, SJSU believes it can win the ACHA National Championship this year.
